Depending on your character concept, you might find yourself short on one end or another - when it comes to Karma and/or Nuyen.
This system has been in a place in the 3rd edition, and for the sake of balance, I reintroduce into the 4th edition with house-rules, until a solution can be found in a source book (if I missed it, and anyone knows where to find similar rules, please let me know).
Karma for Cash
The Karma for Cash rule is mostly useful for mages, since they tend to use a lot of it for improving their abilities, rather than spending tons of cash on new toys. But everyone can benefit from good Karma, and helping out Lady Luck can't hurt anybody.
When a character buys Karma wih money, she does something helpful or selfless for friends, family, neighborhoods, etc. Smaller amounts could be a little boost for a connection, throwing a party for your chummers down in the Underground or similar things. Higher amounts can go as far as getting kids off the streets and into a home, which the character is improving with a fair donation - that kind of stuff.
The availability is in place to measure the amount of time it takes until the money has been spent the needed ways, and the karma awards the character. Roll Negotiation + Charisma with a treshhold depending on the amount of Karma desired.
As you can see, getting a lot of Karma will cost a lot of money. You can make this purchase once every so often. That means that it's up to the GM, when the next favor comes your way. In generel, expect a downtime of at least (3 + Karma gained) ingame months.
Cash for Karma
This rule is for those of you, that are happy with your stats, but you really want that rocket luncher with Dragon-seeking missiles. When you trade in Karma to gain a little extra Cash, consider it a break in the hard life of a shadowrunner.
Maybe an old buddy finally repaid a favor he owed, maybe an oddity in the matrix routed a banking transaction accentitly to your account and the system got screwed up enough, that it's not traceable. Whatever it is, luck was in the characters side and some extra cash came in.
Again, the more money you want, the more Karma you will have to spend.
The minimum cost is 1 Karma point, even if the desired amount would be, for whatever reason, below 5,000 nuyen.
For every Karma point spent, the character recieves 5,000 nuyen.
There is availbility in place, again to see how long it takes for the money to roll in. It's equal to the amount of Karma spent, and the player has to roll only his or her Edge extended Test with an interval of 1 week per roll.
