If one ignored the dark clouds in the far distance, the Zone hasn't presented much of an anomaly for the first day, the team got there. It's been nothing more than a rebel camp, and surely didn't the first impressions do justice to the few things known about this place.
Though, nightfall should change this.
As the campfires died, flashlight were turned off, and most of the camp quiet down, a certain feeling of unease and restlessness overcame the runners.
The night sky was beautiful. Millions of stars covered the dark night above, and a light breeze whispered soothing through the camp.
But then, the howling started. Though far in the distance, everybody couldn't help but feel that the howling was directed towards them. Nobody could explain it, but they all somehow knew, the weird, at times high pitched calls from the distance, were calling something within the camp. Something was amongst them, though nobody could see it.
Snake Eyes got the first glimpse of it, as he slowly drifted away into sleep. Dark, blood-red eyes were starring at him for just a heartbeat. He couldn't notice any background count, nor any other mana-anomalies, though this first impression was certainly more than just his mind playing tricks on him.
He summoned a handful of watchers to patrol the area, though they didn't report anything unusual.
Maybe it was just his nerves, but Snake Eyes knew something was in the camp. Whatever it was, it must have been able to hide its presence from his watchers.
The hair on his body stood up straight and Snake Eyes couldn't help but feel a very unnerving calm befor a storm.
For Guai, the night was plagued with confusing dreams. She woke up a number of times, and as she went back to sleep again, the same dream kept coming back to her.
She saw herself from behind, standing on an empty field. Before her, her half brother was walking towards the background, which was blurred. She wasn't able to recognize, what it was her brother walked towards. Then, with a sudden flash, the perspective changed. Her vision was now in front of her brother, and she could see herself standing in the background. Her lips were moving, though she couldn't hear, what she was saying. Her brother's face was covered in tears, which soon turned red, turned to blood. He turned around once and said, that he was sorry. He said, that he has to go, that the answer was in here. Then he turned back around, looking straight into the observer, as if he was looking into Guai's eyes watching the scene through a neutral window. He pointed straight forward and said, "You're the answer."
Then she woke up, yet again covered in tears, overwhelmed by loss and dread.
Though, the strongest feeling of depression overcame the Technomancer, Shade. It was hard for him to fall asleep. The little bit of background noise, he was so used to, that came from his drone and his truck, was enough to keep him sane. But it wasn't enough to keep him fulfilled. The constant buzz of rare, uncompiled data was simply missing.
Maybe it wasn't the first time that Shade felt disconnected; after all, you can't be around a life matrix all the time as Shadowrunner, but this time it was different.
As he couldn't sleep, Shade sat up and looked into the distance. Before too long, he noticed that he was looking straight north, straight towards the so called Eye of the Storm, even though he couldn't see the dark clouds at night. He first filed it away as his missing link to the matrix, but as the hours passed, he felt more and more that something bigger is hidden in the north. It was almost like as if he could grasp a whisper of deep resonance, which was pooling up at the end of the dark horizon. Though his logic kept telling him that this was simply not possible, his own resonance began to vibrate by the simple thought of the possibility. The possibility that a fulfillment for his deepest need for connection was so close, yet so far.
Maybe the most mundane experience came for Hiro. Though he too could feel the uncertainty in the air, he wasn't befallen by visions or depression. He almost got a full night of sleep, if it wouldn't have been for this scraping noise in the background. First he thought it was nothing but a local tossing and turning in his shelter. But then Hiro noticed that the noise moved, changed location. Curios and ever-burning with an urge for excitement, he tightened his grip around his sword and tried to sneak up to the noise.
Hiro was sneaking through the camp, following the noise as it lead him away from the shelters, without him realizing it. He found himself standing out in the open, and the first beams of an orange sun already broke the horizon. Thanks to his cybereyes, he was able to see the dirt before him. But there was nothing, that could make a noise.
Then the scratching appeared again right behind him, and before he could turn around, something grabbed him by the ankles, pulled him over and started dragging him over the field. Hiro attempted to yell out, and though he could hear himself yelling in his head, not even a whisper crossed his lips.
As the unknown entity pulled him across the dirt, it kept making a disgusting grunting noise.
The sword still was tight in Hiro's grip, but as long as the beast pulled him with full force, he couldn't do much more but to wait were he was going ...
