Alma had never heard anything prettier than the sound of heavy textbooks clunking together as she threw them into her bag.
“Alma… you didn’t have to do that.” The tall 25 year old man seated on the bed behind her said quietly, head in his hands. “You just ruined your future…!”
“Babe, we ruined our future the moment we took those drugs from the Hospital Pharmacy.” Alma’s voice had an almost cheery tone to it, in stark contrast to the pain in the man’s. She pulled open a drawer from the wooden desk her duffle bag was set on, and began to empty it’s contents into the bas as well. “It was a calculated risk, and we lost. No biggie…. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again the next time.”
“You know you’ll never be a doctor now.” Garret remarked, looking up at her, brown eyes muddled with concern.
She laughed and turned around momentarily to flash him a smile. “I don’t think I ever really wanted to be a doctor. It was just something to do to pass the time.” She finished emptying the drawer, zipped up the bag, and turned around survey the dorm room. Looks like she had gotten everything of hers, all that remained belonged to her roommate, Garret. “I was just lucky the ‘rents were able to get me off with only an expulsion.”
“I never did figure you out, did I?” Garret stood, with a forlorn grin, and wrapped his arms around Alma, giving her a hug. “We probably shouldn’t be seen around each other anymore either, you know.”
She buried her face in his shoulder, showing the first bit of vulnribility since this whole fiasco began. “I know.”
“I will look you up when I graduate, I promise you that.” Pushing her away slightly, he grinned, looking into her green eyes. “You’ll come work for me right?”
With a playful grin, Alma pushed him away with one delicate hand, swinging the duffle bag over the shoulder with another. “Depends how much you pay me!”
“Hmmm…. Would you accept other forms of compensation…?” Garret waggled his eyebrows.
“Don’t think you could afford me, hun!” She walked backwards towards the dorm room door, he advancing on her.
“I’ll be in high demand by then.” Quickly darting forward, Garret snuck a kiss from her lips, and leaned back to look at her once last time. “I’ll miss you, take care of yourself.”
Not looking shocked at the kiss, Alma just slipped out the door.
“Don’t I always?”
