“Your Father will take good care of you, bao bei.” The slender woman clutched her daughter’s hand, laying a ragged kiss on the rough forehead inbetween two newly budding horns. She fought back tears as she looked at the girl. “Always obey him. Be a good girl.”
The door to the old apartment shook dangerously as someone pounded on it from the other side.
“But Mother, you are coming too? Father said you would.” A pair of young, innocent brown eyes stared back, not even trying to hold back the emotion as the tears flowed freely down the young girl’s cheeks. She spoke with a slight lisp, not surprising considering the two tusks protruding out of the 13 year old’s lower jaw. “He promised.”
“I will be with you again as soon as I am able.”
The woman glanced upwards at her husband as the small troll girl latched herself to her mother, burying her face in her chest. The man looked back, eyes sad, but his mouth sewn shut in a grim line.
They both knew her words were a lie.
“Lai, I know you are in there!” The pounding on the door became more violent. “You will eventually be forgiven, just hand over the monster.”
“Time to go, my child.” The man pulled on his daughter’s arm, gently leading her away from her mother. “We need to go now.”
The girl grunted, and pulled her arm away from her father. “No. I’m not going without Mother. We are a family, we stay together.”
The girl’s words cut through him like a knife.
“No, bao bei, you have to go.” The woman pleaded with her daughter, dying inside as she pushed her away. “You need to….”
The door exploded in a shower of chips and slivers as a metallic hand punched clean through and ripped the handle off from the inside. The archaic, and now useless, door began to swing lazily open, before it was slammed fully open, allowing the burly man to step through.
“Go, go!” The woman screamed, panicked, all but shoving her daughter into her father’s arms.
Crossing the floor in a quick stride, the Cantonese man easily knocked the woman over, flippantly pointing the heavy pistol in his non- cybered arm at the woman, “Too late, you Trog harboring bitch.”
He turned his attention to the man, who had shoved his terrified daughter to the side, attempting to shield her until she could make her way down the rusted fire escape to the small car that waited in the alley below. “You….” He said, totally disregarding the woman. “You… are useful to the corporation. We never meant to make ill with you Qiao, we just want to help groom you and your family to make you more presentable.”
“By seizing and killing my daughter in cold blood?” Qiao snarled, hand moving towards the Taser hung on his belt, but moving no further as he saw the man’s finger twitch dangerously on the trigger.
The girl whimpered, clinging to get father’s leg so tight he thought she’d snap the bone. They wanted to kill her? Because she was bigger than she used to be? Because she had a pair of horns, or larger teeth? She knew her parents had done everything in their power to protect her, but sometimes that just wasn’t enough.
“Don’t hurt her!” The girl screamed, pulling on her father’s leg so hard he stumbled backwards. “I’ll do whatever…. Just…. don’t shoot my mom…..”
The man snickered, perversely satisfied. “Pathetic your teenage trog daughter is smarter than you, Qiao. You know how dumb these things are?”
The woman lying on the floor began to shake, so furious and terrified her body could hardly handle it. She wasn’t about to let anyone take her daughter until she was cold and dead.
Mei-Xing pulled back her leg and kicked and quick and hard as she could, connected her slim foot directly into the man’s ankle.
She may not have broken anything, but the man snarled in annoyance as he stumbled….
Took his concentration from the girl and her father…..
Pulled the trigger…..
And Mei-Hua snapped.
Before her mother had even screamed in pain from the bullet entering her lower abdomen, the young troll was reacting on instinct alone. Throwing her father to the side without thought, she lanced across the 10 feet separating her from the attacking man, howling in rage.
The man, spun his head, eyes wide in surprise as Mei-Hua grabbed his fore-arm, pulled downward, and squeezed. His face contorted in pain as the bone splintered and compressed under sheer force of pressure, the forgotten gun clattering to the floor as the muscles of the arm holding it were shredded to fiber.
Without even time for him to scream, the side of the troll’s balled up fist punching upwards connected with his head coming down, his nose breaking, eyes bulging out of their sockets, upper jaw shattering and cracking, as the entire middle of his face was basically collapsed inwards.
When he hit the floor 3 seconds later, his head was nothing but a cranium connected to a shattered neck, holding a soup of blood, bone splinters, teeth, and torn flesh.
Mei-Hua let out the breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding as she collapsed backwards, and immediately looked for her mother.
Qiao grabbed his daughter, having no trouble guiding her to her feet and towards the back window in her post adrenaline stupor. Tears streaming down his face, he quickly dialed for an ambulance, and turned to follow his daughter.
She, however, never took her eyes of her mother. “……Mom…? Mom? MOM!”
“Stop!” Qiao bellowed, calling on every bit of strength he could muster to hold the troll girl back. “Your mother sacrificed herself for you. Do not let her die in vain. Go out the window NOW.”
“…die?” Mei-Hua stumbled backwards, clumsily making her way out the window with constant urging from her father. She wasn’t even listening, her ears were ringing. She couldn’t feel the blood and chunks of flesh dripping off her hands. All she could concentrate on was the dark red blood slowly staining her mother’s blouse.
It was the last time she ever saw her.
